General Erich Straube (1887-1971) was a German general in the Wehrmacht during World War II. Karl Straube (1873-1950) was a notable organist and conductor. Alive today are a famous soccer player, an actress, an author, a painter, and several CEOs, all bearing the name Straube. The Straube name originated in Germany, and there are many that live there today.

The Origins of the Straube Family Line

This book starts with Johann Augustus Stroube, who was born in Bavaria, Germany, and died in Augusta, Bracken County, Kentucky. Johann had five children that we know of, each with long lines of descendants. I have listed Johann A. Stroube along with his immediate family, but my research focuses on Christian Straube (1791-1867), his descendants, and the hundreds who have married into the Christian Straube family. The Straubes were my maternal side, along with the Morris, Willis, Mudd, and Myers lines. There are hundreds of surnames that married into these families. The two spellings are interconnected. My family line stayed with the Straube spelling with Christian. Two families in the Christian Straube line changed their name to Strauby and Straubie for unknown reasons, but they were born Straube.

Early Days of My Genealogy Journey

My interest in family genealogy started in the early days of the internet. Websites like ancestry.com and findagrave.com were in their infancy and not particularly good. Prior to these sites becoming what they are today, researchers used Family Group Sheets that were xeroxed over and over, so the quality of the print was faint, and you were lucky if you received one that was typed. My original mentors were family members that researched our history decades before I was interested in it, and they called people on the phone and wrote to people the old-fashioned way, which is now referred to as “snail mail.” This was before cell phones were even thought of, and long distance was relatively expensive.

Acknowledging the Ongoing Nature

This work is published as a means of furthering the work of any person engaged in genealogical research on the family lines listed. It does not represent complete research into all available sources. It has been said that genealogy work is never done. As you are reading this, there is no doubt that there are recent discoveries, and you may even have facts of which I am not aware. I certainly hope so, and you are welcome to communicate discrepancies or additions to the author.

My Research

While my research spans a couple of decades, it was not continuous, non-stop work. It is a hobby that lends itself to winter when you are stuck inside and in between the demands of family and career. As I type this, I am semi-retired, the family is grown and gone, and I have picked up where I left off. The information on the internet is much more complete and easier to find. It still requires due diligence because there are hundreds of people with the same name.

Where the Straube Family Calls Home

The Christian Straube line and related families are located all throughout the United States; however, the largest concentration is in the Missouri counties of Audrain, Montgomery, Marion, and Pike. The largest concentration of burials is in the Siloam Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Pike County, Missouri. There are at least 100 buried in Siloam.
